"I mean, this was fine. I love a novel that expresses the place it is written to be in, and considering the author grew up in Hawaii where this story was set, I found that element very successful. I’m also a sucker for WWII historical novels, and this one was decently well researched. My biggest issue was the writing. For starters, I take issue with books that switch from first to third person. And the character development was lacking. I did end up caring for Ella, Violet and Parker, but my empathy came more from an understanding that these things really happened. I’m still haunted from the hours I spent in the touring the Pacific Theater exhibit at National WWII Museum in New Orleans. So all this to say, it’s a very middling 3, but it makes me very excited to visit Hawaii!"
