Rooted in Lewis' personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.Book One spans John Lewis' youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr., the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and their battle to tear down segregation through nonviolent lunch counter sit-ins, building to a stunning climax on the steps of City Hall. Many years ago, John Lewis and other student activists drew inspiration from the 1958 comic book "Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story." "Graphic novels have a great power to bring stories to life, and this series, March, detailing the struggle for Civil Rights is definitely brought to life through vivid storytelling and dynamic illustrations.

March: Book Two highlights the struggles of the Freedom Riders. I have read of them before. I have read of the Civil Rights Movement before. I have read of sit-ins and marches and non-violent peaceful protests before. But never have I been brought close to understand how it felt, how frustrating the process was, the pains and grievances and injustices they endured. Never until I examined it closely through the eyes of this book. I felt every punch thrown, I flinched with every brick thrown, I cried to see children being hosed and dogs sent to attack them. How could this have ever happened in our "civilized" American society? Because I have not lived this, I will never completely understand but this book brings me much closer to the understanding I seek. I am immensely grateful for the men and women who fought for Civil Rights, sacrificing all that was required of them for the greater good.

(This book also juxtaposes the inauguration of President Barack Obama with the Civil Rights March on Washington. It includes quotes from John Lewis's speech given at the March as well as the full text at the end of the book.)"
