"Both of the main characters in this were insufferable in the first half, but the book got so much better as it went on. i

I didn’t realize this was Devney’s first book ever written. That makes so much sense, because this has her signature thriller/romance vibes, but it wasn’t executed as flawlessly as some of her other stories."

"I was enjoying this for the first few chapters and then it all went downhill. The trouble with the romance was that there didn't seem to be any real growth of the two characters, as individuals or as a couple. Their fights looked the same throughout the book. Jess ordering and being overbearing and Gigi giving in and letting him have his way when speaking her peace didn't do her any good. She refers to Jess as an asshole and I firmly agree. There are things about this that I think are realistic, but for a book, I would like to see growth. Jess is not a man I would want in my life. He plows through all fights and disagreements, winning, and that is that.

There were stretches of this book that I felt unnecessary. There were scenes in this book only to be added to have another fight. The same fight. The same behaviors and characteristics that never get resolved that make the scenes redundant. It made the book feel longer than it needed to be.

I never really connected with Gigi. I thought I would at first but after the first few introductory chapters I felt as Gigi was nothing but a victim. We all suffer through negative thoughts and self image. There was just something about Gigi's internal dialogue about how awful she is in bed and how every partner made sure to tell her that I wanted to bitch slap some sense into her. This is definitely one of the things I hate most about romance books/movies. Gigi's role in this book was the victim. She played or acted like the victim throughout and just once I wanted her to really stand up for herself, to make smarter choices and to learn how to communicate better.

The blurb sounded right up my alley, but mostly, this left me feeling very disappointed. It started out promising and took a turn for the worse and never let up. I don't plan on trying out book 2 to see if the characters are any better."
