Zack Mayo is an aloof, taciturn man who aspires to be a navy pilot. Once he arrives at training camp for his 13-week officer's course, Mayo runs afoul of abrasive, no-nonsense drill Sergeant Emil Foley. Mayo is an excellent cadet, but a little cold around the heart, so Foley rides him mercilessly, sensing that the young man would be prime officer material if he weren't so self-involved. Zack's affair with a working girl is likewise compromised by his unwillingness to give of himself.

"This romantic military 🎖️🪖 drama was all the rage in the 1980's. I didn't really understand this until I got older, but even then, I didn't really believe that it was all bout the romance. I was completely focused on the push and pull relationship between Richard Gere and Louis Gossett, Jr.. I really enjoyed their dramatic scenes. "

"This is one of my favourite movies of all time. It’s one of the first movies I ran as a projectionist. In my opinion it has a magnificent cast. The plot is incredible and the soundtrack is perfect. A few of the cast got their starts in this movie. It’s a ten out of ten. I’ve watched it at least a dozen times. I’d watch it again if I had the chance. "
