Performed in 1902, after being banned by the censor for eight years, Shaw's indictment of the hypocrisy surrounding prostitution still shocked its audiences. "The version I saw was on the BBC's Shaw Collection that was originally on the Play of the month television show. This was a Shaw forbidden play but there is nothing too mature to view. It was a humanizing performance to show the culture of people that prostitution was an economic situation and not always a moral choice. The character of Vivie grew up with care but not knowing much of her mother and finally is determined to have it out with her mother's expectations when she finds out how her mother was raised and became a prostitute out of need. Well there is more to it. It was a great story and one that I'm glad Shaw told. "
