"This movie was meant to be an epic, but it is simply just a 3 hour film. Montgomery Clift as John, Eva-Marie Saint as Nell, and Elizabeth Taylor as Susanna form the beginning of a romantic triangle that plays through the entire film. Susanna is on the side of the south in the backdrop of the U.S. Civil War, and John and Nell on the South. A strange side plot tries to make Susanna 's character mysterious, but it doesn't quite work. The civil war affects the population of Raintree County, and that is shown in the last half of the film. Lee Marvin and Rod Taylor play the roles of county residents who decide to take a prominent place in the ongoing war. The acting is good, but the storyline goes from dramatic sadness to heartwarming romance. It is uneven. "
