The Lovers is an epic romance time travel adventure film. Helmed by Roland Joffé from a story by Ajey Jhankar, the film is a sweeping tale of an impossible love set against the backdrop of the first Anglo-Maratha war across two time periods and continents and centred around four characters — a British officer in 18th century colonial India, the Indian woman he falls deeply in love with, an American present-day marine biologist and his wife.

"I saw this period drama awhile ago, and I wanted to give it another viewing. I guess my memories of it should have stayed in the past. I wish I could rate it 2.5 stars, but there is no way to do that. While I understand that the director was trying to use the trope of lovers in parallel lives, past and present, it simply was not executed correctly. Joshua Hartnett plays the dual role of a marine biologist in the present and a Scottish soldier in the English Navy of the 1800's. Bipasha Basu plays the role of an Indian court lady escorted to a political rendezvous by his character Jay. The story goes back and forth into the past and present, and it seems as if large parts of the plot were edited. I really believe that this movie started as one genre, and was cut down and reframed into a completely different genre.

"At first this seemed like it might be pretty good. It definitely had the "appearance" of epic, with a great set/costumes, and nice-looking main characters, etc., however the scenes did not seem to flow well and the storyline came across as so very disjointed imo. I also thought the time travel aspect in this movie was rather kind of strange and unsatisfying."
