Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.I’ve spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood. But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life. Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.Everyone wants me to be something I’m not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice. But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated? And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

"One chapter into this book, and I knew I was going to be mad and madly in love. Mad because it came out 4 days ago and spoiler alert, it's not a standalone. The world building was absolutely lovely. No wonder it was already picked up by a production company because I could practically see it playing out in my head. Odessa was very relatable. Why? Because she had flaws. She wasn't the strongest or brightest, but she worked hard and had good character. Also, her incessant questions were hilarious. Curiosity got her into a lot of trouble, which just meant more fun for me.
This was such a slowburn, but boy, was it worth it. I ached for her to be able to feel another human being. Odessa constantly felt like she didn't belong, and we became companions in that. The twist and turns were bitter sweet. Oh, and the love interest, words can't even express. There were brief touches I longed for, confusion, and heartache. Also, plenty of steam. I couldn't get enough, and it couldn't come fast enough either. I read this 600+ page book in two days, ya'll. And I reeled over it afterward for even longer. When I say I lost sleep and brain cells over this story, it was in the most delicious way possible.
I can not even begin to believe this is a debut fantasy. I definitely want to read more of Devney Perry's work. The side characters were wonderful as well. Evie, that cute little hellion stole my heart. I actually enjoyed the portrayal of Mae, Odessa's sister. It was such a breath of fresh air. Normally, authors write characters as good or bad with no grey area. Mae was definitely a grey area, but that makes it all the more real. She was a spoiled murderous brat, but she loved Odessa.
There were so many questions and emotions going through this story I was beyond impressed. I have to mention the world building again because for over 600 pages I was living in it and now I miss the feeling. Every element, every monster, every emotion was just perfect and well thought out. "
