"4.5 ⭐️ I’ve discovered I am very fond of this format of book/audiobook that includes podcasts and interviews layered throughout the narration to add that extra layer of fun and to keep the reader/listener on their toes. The audio was very well done. Multiple voice actors creating a graphic audio adaptation like style. I was instantly intrigued, sucked in and couldn’t stop. I just had to know what the heck was going on and even though I was mildly underwhelmed when it came to the ending, I definitely wished I had a discussion group to chat with about it! Overall I was entertained and would recommend. "
"I loved most of this novel except the ending which is why I only rated it 4/5⭐️. From the very beginning of the novel, you can pick up on the absolutely unreliability of Josie and the complete desire of Alix to have something shake up her mundane daily life. Their juxtaposition as characters is well written and it helps the plot seem more realistic or at least gives us as readers a reason Alix would even let this crazy person into her life in the first place. I would say at least 80% of this novel was fantastic, the build up was suspenseful in its own slow-burn way. The ending really threw me for a loop. I wish there was more of a resolution to the story. The craziness and reveals just kind of fizzled out into one of those vague endings that leaves the outcome to the reader while also leaving the door open for a potential second novel."
"This book was a slow burn right up until the very end. It was incredible to hear the breakdown of Josie’s life and it did really felt like I was in the middle of a crime drama breakdown. When I first read the books summary, I could’ve never pieced together that this book would come out of it. The entire book was about questioning who you could trust and who was going to turn on who. It played with the emotions and with the mind. The character are unreliable, the back story is too wild to be true, I found myself yelling at the characters because I wanted them to be smarter. I feel like though the overall book felt slower, that there was a constant feeling that something bad was going to happen or be uncovered next. As more of the character lives unfurl, it is building into a very interesting climax. This book made me consider being more careful with who I let into my life. The book had this aspect of being a Netflix documentary, which I wasn’t th biggest fan of. But I love how the character told her story through this medium. There was so much charged energy in this book that I didn’t want to put it down.
If you are a fa of crime dramas, psychological thrillers, a movie-like storytelling then you will most likely enjoy this book. It will keep you guessing right up until the end. This book was one of the wildest rides, I would definitely read it again.
TW: this book does include abuse, alcoholism, mental-instability, pedophilia, and death. "
"I still think going in blind often times is the best thing about reading. Josie's story and strange demeanor had me hooked from the beginning. There was a creeping feeling throughout the pages, and plenty of times, I got secondhand embarrassment, which usually means the author is bringing the characters to life.
What is going on? Who is manipulating who.
Loved the podcast and interview parts with ambient noise in the background. I think the audiobook was the way to go here. The story felt like a threat inside my own. The characters felt real, and I loved the strong-willed Alix. It was easy to attach to these people. This book was chilling and off-putting, even gaslighting me at times.
Just be careful what you invited into your home."
"Master class in tension building! Wished there was one more little twist at the end but it was a very good book and a good read!!!"
