Road Home
Books | Juvenile Nonfiction / Biography & Autobiography / General
Rex Ogle
When Rex was outed the summer after he graduated high school, his father gave him a choice: he could stay at home, find a girlfriend, and attend church twice a week, or he could be gay--and leave. Rex left, driving toward the only other gay man he knew and a toxic relationship that would ultimately leave him homeless and desperate on the streets of New Orleans. Here, Rex tells the story of his coming out and his father's rejection of his identity, navigating abuse and survival on the streets. Road Home is a devastating and incandescent reflection on Rex's hunger--for food, for love, and for a place to call home--completing the trilogy of memoirs that began with the award-winning Free Lunch.

"I was searching for a random book to read while I was stuck making up hours for school when I came across this book. As I usually do, I didn't read what it was about and I dove straight into it. Let me tell you, I could not put this book down! I had to make up 9 hours of missed school so naturally I finished it in 2-3 after school sessions. This book made me feel so deeply for the author. I am not a part of the LGBTQ+ community but I do support and I feel so sorry for those who have had life struggles due to being who they are. Rex really gave me a new insight on not only what is like to be homeless but to be disregarded because of who you love and although he found somebody at the beginning it really hurts to see how the only security he had wasn't the safest option for him. A message to those who are queer let me tell you this God does not hate you, you are his child, he loves you. God put someone on this planet for you and if they are the same gender, so what? love who you love! And now for those Christians who say they hate queers, God told us to be his light in the darkness and hating on others for being themselves isn't what he called you to do. He also says to love one another and not to judge because in the end he is the only right one to judge us for he knows us best. Now in that same note you can choose not to support but not supporting doesn't mean to hate!"
