After a lifetime spent in the deep forest, Alyssa has no idea what to expect on the other side. What she finds is two unruly young princesses and one very handsome prince. When Alyssa accepts the job of Princess Companion she knows her life will change. What she doesn't know is that the royal family is about to be swept up in unexpected danger and intrigue, and that she just might be the only thing standing between her kingdom and destruction. "I understand that as a story device, stating that this is a retelling is tantalizing to an avid reader of fairytales like me. But aside from the first chapter, a mention in the second act, and one in the final chapter, nothing about this book is princess and the pea. The writer should have more faith in her writing, because it truly stands out on its own merits. The character Alyssa, is a woodcutter's daughter, who by extraordinary circumstances, is mixed into the daily lives of a royal family, and a handsome prince named Max, the King and Queen, and their youngest girl princesses. As you can imagine, the story is about Max and Alyssa. Some of the plot is predictable, but is still fun to read, with some twists and turns, and some court intrigue. There are several subplots running, with some exciting and even dangerous situations for the main characters. I enjoyed reading a few chapters every day, and was sad when the story ended. I liked how all of the characters were fleshed out enough for you to have a reaction to them. Good writing here, but sometimes you feel that it is much more of a young adult story. But that is alright with me. "
"I have fallen in love with this entire series, and I can’t wait to read the other sister series to these books! I love that each of these books uses the fairy tales as the structure of the plot but the story itself is jam packed with original details and characters. Never a dull moment! "
