Fredrik Backman
#1 New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman returns with an unforgettably funny, deeply moving tale of four teenagers whose friendship creates a bond so powerful that it changes a complete stranger's life twenty-five years later. Most people don't even notice them--three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. Most people think it's just a depiction of the sea. But Louisa, an artist herself, knows otherwise and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures. Twenty-five years earlier, in a distant town, a group of teenagers find refuge from their difficult home lives by spending their days laughing and telling stories out on a pier. There's Joar, who never backs down from a fight; quiet and bookish Ted who is mourning his father; Ali, the daughter of a man who never stays in one place for long; and finally, there's the artist, a boy who hoards sleeping pills and shuns attention, but who possesses an extraordinary gift that might be his ticket to a better life. These four lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning, a reason to dream. Out of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art, a painting that will unexpectedly be put into eighteen-year-old Louisa's care. As she struggles to decide what to do with this bequest, she embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn the story of how the painting came to be. The closer she gets to the painting's birthplace, the more she feels compelled to unleash her own artistic spirit, but happy endings don't always take the form we expect in this fresh testament to the transformative power of friendship and art. Praise for Fredrik Backman "Backman captures the messy essence of being human...clever and affecting, as likely to make you laugh out loud as it is to make you cry." --Washington Post "The perfect balance of heartwarming and heart-wrenching...Fredrik Backman has a way of simply yet elegantly describing relationships. We can all be idiots, but we're still all human beings worthy of connection and love." -NPR "Everything Backman's pen touches oozes with insight and heart." --Amazon Book Review "Backman is a masterful writer, his characters familiar yet distinct, flawed yet heroic."--Kirkus Reviews "As popular Swedish exports go, Backman is up there with Abba and Stieg Larssson." --The New York Times Book Review

"Well there you have it. My favorite book of 2025. I will be surprised if any other book tops this one. Honestly I’ll probably read it again.

I’ve read 2 other books by Fredrik Bachman, Anxious People and Bear Town. And I liked them fine. Nothing to write home about. So I was hesitant to read this one. But boy am I happy that I did.

This story hit me just right. I listened to the audiobook and laughed out and cried. Each time I put the story back in my ear I was swept away on a train ride with Ted and Louisa, laughing at their banter or crying at Ted’s stories of his friends. I wanted to meet, know and befriend each of these characters. I was so invested in each of their lives, and loved how it all ended. Very heartwarming indeed.

Such a great summer read. Such a beautiful book.

Love love.

“The world is full of miracles, but none greater than how far a young person can be carried by someone else's belief in them”

“It's a funny thing. The person we fall in love with, we hardly ever call by their name.
Because it's somehow just so obvious that it's you I'm talking to, that it's you I'm always thinking of. Who else?”

“You can't love someone out of addiction, all the oceans are the tears of those who have tried. We're not allowed to die for our children, the universe won't let us, because then there wouldn't be any mothers left.”"

"Wow, really wow! I struggled with this book only because I had just finished a really good book. If any of you have read any other books written by Frederik Backman, you know that it is worth to persevere through the first few chapters.
I would like the thank #netgalley for giving me this ARC for an honest review. To those of you that read my reviews, you will know that I do not like to give anything away about the story. There are a lot of other reviewers that will give you a deep dive into the story.
This story involves 4 young friends, one who becomes famous and the story shows you how friendships from a young age can stay strong throughout one's lifetime. They meet more characters along the way, they help these newcomers even though they all have grown up in not the best circumstances.
I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it."
