River isn't prepared for this. There's nothing in the Agreements about how to deal with an XY. Yet one lies before her, sick, suffering, and at her mercy. River can kill him, or she can save him. "This book was honestly kinda mid. I bought it eagerly because I love dystopia and this sounded like just the right amount of post-apocalyptic world mixing with an exploration of gender roles that I needed after coming out of an English class that was based around pretty much exactly that. But the book came up short...
The writing felt a bit childish. We are expected to believe that the main character is a teenager, just starting puberty and dealing with Hormones, and yet she just about throws a temper tantrum when her mom and grandma decide to partially illegaly harbor a boy in their house... And she's about to throw this tantrum for like most of the book. Obviously, yes, the idea that she has never seen a male before and now here's one that attacked her and her entire world has been flipped upside down is terrifying and anyone would be upset. But I feel like the book doesn't take the time to either allow her to be properly upset or allow her to properly deal with and get over that.
The plot itself felt very fast paced. I think it could've benefited from being two books or at least one longer than 300 pages as it wasn't able to really explore anything that is happening.
However, I did read this book in 3 days, and I did in fact enjoy it enough to read it all, so make of that what you will."
