William Faulkner
The tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

"The first section of this book knocked me off my rocker and left me thrashing on the way down. I loved the use of time, memory and repetition in the entire novel. I read the racist perspectives in this is through gritted teeth… but Faulkner’s frankness was so sobering the perspective felt somehow brand new. This book contextualized a lot of the old attitudes of station, class and race from truly miserable characters. These characters desperately needed to hold themselves above others to feel alive and well in a changing American, but specifically American south."
