Two women—one alive, one dead—are brought together in the dark underbelly of New York City to solve a tragic murder. When she arrived in New York on her eighteenth birthday carrying nothing but $600 cash and a stolen camera, Alice Lee was looking for a fresh start. Now, just one month later, she is the city’s latest Jane Doe. She may be dead but that doesn’t mean her story is over. Meanwhile, Ruby Jones is also trying to reinvent herself. After travelling halfway around the world, she’s lonelier than ever in the Big Apple. Until she stumbles upon a woman’s body by the Hudson River, and suddenly finds herself unbreakably tied to the unknown dead woman. Alice is sure Ruby is the key to solving the mystery of her short life and tragic death. Ruby just wants to forget what she saw…but she can’t seem to stop thinking about the young woman she found. If she keeps looking, can she give this unidentified Jane Doe the ending and closure she deserves? A “heartbreaking, beautiful, and hugely important novel” (Rosie Walsh, New York Times bestselling author), Before You Knew My Name doesn’t just wonder whodunnit—it also asks who was she? And what did she leave behind?

"Be prepared to not be able to put this book down! Aside from the bouncing around timeline this book was absolutely amazing!"

"Interesting perspective as author writes from the story from the murder victims posthumous perspective. Other than that the rest of story and characters fell flat to me. "

"Fabulous debut novel - already looking forward to more from this author!!

Before You Knew My Name follows the lives of two women from very different backgrounds, both heading down the same path as they arrive in New York City, escaping their pasts with big dreams. Alice Lee is just 18, leaving behind a past of bad decisions after a rough childhood filled with loss - now wandering the streets of New York with a stolen camera, $600, and a ton of "what if's" in her head. Ruby is 36, trying to escape her life back in Australia, and a man she just can't seem to get out of her head, no matter how bad he is for her. A fresh start in New York is just what they both need...

When Ruby is out jogging in Riverside Park and finds Alice Lee's dead body floating in the river, her world shifts and she can't explain the connection she feels to this Jane Doe. Ruby can not get this young woman out of her head and is determined to find answers and closure. With the help of some new friends, oddly all drawn together by death and loss, Ruby helps Alice Lee find her name, and is determined to bring justice to the man who took away her chance at a beautiful new life.

I loved the alternating POVs and especially hearing Alice Lee's voice from beyond the grave. I was immediately sucked into this novel and did not want it to end!"
"Thank you to #netgalley for allowing me to give an honest review on this ARC. I liked this book, did not love it because I figured it out long before the ending."

"I read this book a while ago so it is hard for me to remember enough to give it a great rating.

I do remember it was relatively challenging for me to get through, the weight of the content and the speed at which the story moved made it hard for me to keep reading and I wanted to put the book down several times. I do however have several quotes that I wrote down from the book. I thought the topic of the oppression that women go through to be spoken on so eloquently, there were several times throughout the book that my thoughts felt extracted from my brain and painted onto the page.

Overall I really enjoyed the plot line. I thought that, while relatively predictable, the storyline was well thought out and considered, but more importantly I thought that the hard topics the text faced were dealt with logically and eloquently. I appreciated being broken hearted for these people and for the world that we live in where stories like this go untold and forgotten far too often. Glad to have read it, I think about this book often."
