Dark Rise - Likewise Book Reviews
"I did like it, but also didn't like it. Half and half. Violet is the best character, and I cared about none other, which is not great. Some parts were well thought and planned, some were quite enjoyable and interesting, some were long and a bit boring-ish. You might like it if you're into destiny and how one struggles with it."
"So I got that feeling again from Pacat while reading book one in this new series. The feeling that this story is all a set up to a bigger world and that's ok with me. Honestly The Captive Prince was my least favorite in her trilogy. But I still loved the heck out of them as I do this book. From the first chapter I knew I would enjoy it and that doesn't happen often.

Thank the Gods this didn't read like your average YA which knowing what little I do about the author, I honestly wasn't too scared about. Pacat's words are darkly seductive and the inevitable cliff hanger had me grinning like a fool and checking the calendar to see when I can read book two.

I loved the feeling of fellowship and earned trust. The side character Violet was a breath of fresh air, though she seemed just as important as the protagonist to me. These charaters were highly contradictory. Some born to be evil but chose their own path instead. It was exciting following their arcs.

There was also good world building but the biggest flaw to me was the absent of travel. The characters would move one location to the next like a film cut. No hours spent on the road or evading notice, just in the castle one minute and back in town the next. It left something to be desired.

While I didn't know what the twist would be at first it became obvious later in the story so it wasn't a total shock. Still I'm excited to see where this story is heading and I'm all here for it."
"It was a good read! Personally, the writing was a bit confusing at the beginning, and at times it felt a bit rushed and that the characters were one-sided and underdeveloped. But the twists at the end completely make you rethink the book in such a clever way! I would recommend this book, but it definitely wasn’t my favorite. And here’s a warning—it’s a series, and ends on a cliffhanger. So far the sequel hasn’t come out, so if you’re going to read it when I’m writing this, you might have to wait a few months!!"

"Probably my favorite of this year as far as plot goes. Took me till the last few chapters for me to finally see the twists coming, that’s rare for me. "
