They came to earth--Pestilence, War, Famine, Death--four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all. The day Jerusalem falls, Miriam Elmahdy knows her life is over. Houses are burning, the streets run red with blood, and a traitorous army is massacring every last resident. There is no surviving this, especially not once Miriam catches the eye of War himself. But when the massive and terrifying horseman corners Miriam, he calls her his wife, and instead of killing her, he takes her back to his camp. Now Miriam faces a terrifying future, one where she watches her world burn town by town, and the one man responsible for it all is her seemingly indestructible "husband". But there's another side to him, one that's gentle and loving and dead set on winning her over, and she might not be strong enough to resist. However, if there's one thing Miriam has learned, it's that love and war cannot coexist. And so she must make the ultimate choice: surrender to War and watch humankind fall, or sacrifice everything and stop him.

"I feel like the imbalance of power between the main characters was a lot more evident in the sequel to this series and that made it less enjoyable.

War always came out on top in any argument and I don’t feel like I ever saw a Miriam “win.” I wish there had been a bit more balance because it makes for a more interesting book in my opinion.

Miriam used her body as a bargaining tool and I can respect a woman who does that as long as the trade off seems worth it. In this case I feel like Miriam got completely screwed over by War and honestly if she wanted to have sex so badly so should have just gone for it no strings attached.

This made Miriam seemed a lot easier to win over as well which isn’t necessarily bad, but I love a good slow burn and I didn’t get that.

I still liked the premise of the book and enjoyed reading it, the bar set by Pestilence just wasn’t met."

"this book was written really well and the series is such an interesting idea and i will continue reading, but i found War irredeemable after all he had done. He unapologetically unalived innocent people in violent and terrifying ways and set out to deeply hurt Miriam many times."
