For the millions of readers raised on The Yearling, here is the story of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's experiences in the remote Florida hamlet of Cross Creek, where she lived for thirteen years. From the daily labors of managing a seventy-two-acre orange grove to bouts with runaway pigs and a succession of unruly farmhands, Rawlings describes her life at the Creek with humor and spirit. Her tireless determination to overcome the challenges of her adopted home in the Florida backcountry, her deep-rooted love of the earth, and her genius for character and description result in a most delightful and heartwarming memoir.

"“Cross Creek belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons, to the cosmic secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time.”

This novel is a love poem, a history, a biography. It is the story of an ex-"Yankee" woman and her life in the backwoods (or should I say backswamp?) of Florida, and of her love of the land, its people, its flora and fauna. It is a hard and sometimes a desperate life well lived.

For those who have seen the 1983 Martin Ritt film by the same name, expect many differences. As pleasant as the movie is, it is a simplification and conglomeration of Rawlings' text. Perhaps by necessity.

As I read it, I was reminded of On Walden Pond by Thoreau. But it's so much better."
