"Probably the best Gamache yet. This one works well as a standalone if you’re not sure about the series and want to dive right in to get a feel without the commitment of the slow build through the first 2-3. Obviously knowing the characters makes their growth all the more interesting but past reading isn’t required. As a Canadian I was a bit baffled by some of the newly clumsy references tossed in like Penny’s use of Fahrenheit for temperature, “Canadian maple syrup”, explanations of what Canadian Tire money is, etc. The rest of the writing integrates Canadiana so expertly that it stands out - possibly an issue with the American edition thrown in by an editor rather than Penny’s original work? I’d be interested to compare to The Murder Stone and see. <br/><br/>All that said it’s a minor distraction and I love that this class murder mystery was NOT a psychological suspense - but also manages to be more than just a “cozy mystery”. There’s some literary quality and wisdom here that makes it an edifying as well as an engaging read."

"Here at four books into the series (Oh who I am kidding probably since book two) I think Armand Gamache is going to be one of those characters that I will return to again and again. There is something comforting in his quiet calm manner. No matter the brutal nature of the crime you have such a confidence he will eventually solve the case. This installment of the series is remote, puzzling, and set in a location you wish you could go into the pages to see. "

"Yet another incredible book by Louise Penny! I adore Armand Gamache, and I’m glad that while the book was not set in Three Pines, the characters I’ve grown to love all still appeared. My husband and I have made a habit of listening to the series on our long road trips, and he was ecstatic that he actually guessed the killer correctly. The narrator is also fantastic, I almost enjoy listening to these more than I love reading them! And the food descriptions...my goodness I need to move to Canada to get in on this action."
