"Although it took me what felt like ages to really get into this book, once I did, I ended up really enjoying it! The beginning was a tad bit slow paced, but it did eventually pick up speed. The world building was unique, the magic system was well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and complex politics! The female main character, Briony, was likable, but I never felt like I really clicked with her. She was strong willed and stubborn, but she was also infuriatingly oblivious at times! I mean, clearly Toven (whom I adored btw) was smitten with her! She and Toven spent so much time dancing around one another, the romance aspect of this story ended up being nearly non-existent up until the last 100 pages! I mean, yes there was tension, but it's safe to say the slow burn was a bit much! The real highlight of this book for me, was Toven and his family! I'm a sucker for solid familial bonds, and I absolutely adored the Hearst’s dynamics! The ending of this book had me in a chokehold, and it ended on quite the cliffhanger, so I'm now dying for book two! As long as you're chill with the slowest of slow burns, I'd definitely recommend this book!
