#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of The Longest Ride and The Notebook comes an emotional, powerful novel about wondering if we can change—or even make our peace with—the path we’ve taken.“Sparks is superb at what he does. The setting is postcard perfect. The characters are immensely likable. . . . This is a tidy miracle you can count on.”—The Washington PostTanner Hughes was raised by his grandparents, following in his grandfather’s military footsteps to become an Army Ranger. His whole life has been spent abroad, and he is the proverbial rolling stone: happiest when off on his next adventure, zero desire to settle down. But when his grandmother passes away, her last words to him are find where you belong. She also drops a bombshell, telling him the name of the father he never knew—and where to find him. Tanner is due at his next posting soon, but his curiosity is piqued, and he sets out for Asheboro, North Carolina, to ask around. He’s been in town less than twenty-four hours when he meets Kaitlyn Cooper, a doctor and single mom. They both feel an immediate connection; Tanner knows Kaitlyn has a story to tell, and he wants to hear it. To Kaitlyn, Tanner is mysterious, exciting—and possibly leaving in just a few weeks. Meanwhile, nearby, eighty-three-year-old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest. With only his old dog, Arlo, for company, he lives quietly, haunted by a tragic accident that took place decades before. When he hears rumors that a white deer has been spotted in the forest—a creature of legend that inspired his father and grandfather—he becomes obsessed with protecting the deer from poachers. As these characters’ fates orbit closer together, none of them is expecting a miracle . . . but that may be exactly what is about to alter their futures forever.

"3.5 stars

This is a classic Nicholas Sparks novel. I was a pretty hard core Nicholas Sparks fan when it seemed like his books were everywhere, so reading this book felt like slipping into a well-loved sweater.

Counting Miracles takes place in a small town in North Carolina (where else?) and tells two stories in one: a rolling stone of a guy in search for answers about his past who falls for the town doctor, and a recluse old man in search of a purpose amid untold tragedy.

For a while, it seems random that we keep switching back and forth between these two stories, but by a little over the halfway mark, I could tell how they’re related, but it’s pretty nice to see how the rest of the characters figure things out.

The love story feels a little rushed at times, especially considering how random the circumstances are when the MMC and FMC meet. The third act conflict also seems a little bit forced since nothing had foreshadowed it.

The switching back and forth between the two stories can also give you a little bit of a literary whiplash, switching between a romance and a thriller, but it does add layers to what would otherwise seem like a typical small town romance.

If you are a Nicholas Sparks fan, then you won’t be disappointed by Counting Miracles.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House for sending me this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Counting Miracles is available now wherever books are sold."

"Terribly disappointed in this one. Preachy,(I mean that literally, the Bible and various verses are mentioned so often the book would be at least 25% shorter without them.) The entire story takes place over about a week and we have *instant love *weird religious ponderings abiut an albino deer *poaching *miracle pets *fish falling from the sky (tbf that's a story from another generation but still...) *mother daughter drama and reconciliation *a suprise twist that would come as zero suprise to any reader *"the rich family that can do no wrong" *real estate wonders and more. It felt like the plot was a bunch of weird ideas put into an AI generator, filled out with some Bible verses and published. I've loved several NS books but this was just so, so poorly written. 2/5 because it feels bad to give a burned widower that had his entire family die and lost his fortune only to fall and nearly die alone in the woods just one. I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review."
