“Life is full of crossroads, Alex. Full of choices.”Returning for a second year at Akarnae Academy with her gifted friends, Alexandra Jennings steps back through a doorway into Medora, the fantasy world that is full of impossibilities. Despite the magical wonder of Medora, Alex’s life remains threatened by Aven Dalmarta, the banished prince from the Lost City of Meya who is out for her blood. To protect the Medorans from Aven’s quest to reclaim his birthright, Alex and her friends seek out the Meyarin city and what remains of its ancient race. Not sure who—or perhaps what—she is anymore, all Alex knows is that if she fails to keep Aven from reaching Meya, the lives of countless Medorans will be in danger. Can she protect them, or will all be lost?#EmbraceTheWonder

"there's definitely a tone that feels out of place a lot of times which borders on middle grade far more than young adult. it's a naive, happy go lucky, and unrealistic portrayal of the world and people, it's hard to pin down with words but I often feel like I'm 10 years old watching Saturday morning cartoons. thankfully, the tone is far more heartwarming than cringe.
the other problem I have is the series' magic/tech and how it's failing to suspend by disbelief and using more and more hand waving to brush the details under the rug. I mean, people either walk or use teleporters in this world? really? That's it? there's no middle ground? I know the author tried to explain their obscure classes, but if they're learning to ride horses, why doesn't anyone else in the world use them. ugh.
Anyway, despite all that I obviously enjoyed it enough for five stars, but considering these two issues I maybe should drop one. I think I believe that I'm not the books target, and that if I were 10-16 I would've enjoyed these books. probably? the sappy optimism might've still bugged me... and maybe the magic (it's not tech, I don't believe that.). I need to stop.
Honestly, a major reason I'm checking this series out at all and cruising through it is a combination of its high reviews, it's currently free for audible subscribers, and that free-ness ends in a couple days. I'll finish at least the third book in time, then I'll have mother of learning act 3 waiting for me *squeals like a little girl*.. ahem, sorry, this review got away from me. Carry on."
