"very slow paced, the ending felt very dragged- but!! it was the first book that made me like. scared.
important comment: as someone with adhd, this was a very very difficult book to read, i had to re-read a lot of the pages and paragraphs and it made me frustrated at times; not entirely sure why, but it’s important to add"

"This was a bit of a slow start, but I trust in Darcy Coates so I followed her to the finish and I’m so glad I did! I wasn’t as spooked as I would like through the initial horror scenes, but to say it picked up would be an understatement.

But what I really appreciated here was the “history” woven in, and the parallels I drew from the story to events that I find problematic in our nation’s history. Sometimes I get more value from my perception of a story than the actual intent, but that’s the beauty of being a reader. And horror is an excellent way to lend a lens. I will continue to follow the author’s career, though I may be slightly more discerning for pacing!"

"Darcy Coates does it again. Another book where every one of my nerves was on end for a majority of my read. Two of my favorite things about Darcy's book are the readability of them and the great story telling. Gallows Hill is set up where a lot of mystery surrounds most of the beginning of the book and this propelled me forward even though it felt a bit slow. The build up is worth it though as the last half of the book is filled with excitement that will leave your blood pumping. The supporting characters are well formed and really aid the story through along with a strong female MC. There are many things I want to say, but in doing so would give too much away. I think going into this book as blind as possible makes the experience of reading it so perfect.

Overall, this book will rattle your nerves and get your blood pumping while propelling you to the end. The mystery will keep you looking for clues. Highly recommend!

Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC!"
""Gallows Hill" by Darcy Coates is a gripping exploration of a family's dark legacy. After the sudden death of her parents, Margot returns to her eerie childhood home, a place steeped in mystery and foreboding. As she unravels the chilling secrets her family has kept hidden, she finds herself in a deadly struggle for survival.

Although I initially found Margot's character a bit frustrating, she undergoes significant development that made her journey all the more compelling. Coates crafts an atmosphere so tense and unnerving that I was hooked from start to finish, eager to uncover the next twist. If you're a fan of zombie lore and horror, this novel is a must-read."
