"Tex, also known as That Was Then, This Is Now in happier shades, is another well-crafted story from Hinton. It feels 100% like she rewrote a previous narrative but gave it a different, more hopeful ending.
One thing I've noticed from reading so much of Hinton’s work recently is that she seems to have a distinct perspective on how humans interact with their environments. This perspective shows up in all her characters and is quite compelling—it often involves characters gaining deep insight into the actions of others. Hinton’s characters just know things, and that knowledge becomes a bridge between the story and the reader. If a character understands something, the reader is meant to understand it too.
This stands in stark contrast to the world I live in, which often feels confusing and filled with unclear motives. I struggle to grasp the intentions behind people's actions. That’s why I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether Hinton’s world—where characters navigate truth with such clarity—is a reflection of her own life experience, or simply a mark of great storytelling. Maybe that’s part of why her books are as enduring and impactful as they are.
"Is it truly tragic to fall out of love with someone, or is the real sadness felt only by those who projected their own expectations onto the relationship?""
"Another amazing S.E Hinton book truly I must admit it was a little slow at the start but when it did pick up it was really good. The ending was satisfying but definitely threw me for a loop ( I cried ) and it was a little long but it was needed. The writing and metaphors were very smooth. Just a beautiful book of growing up to fast and we get to see the moment where Texas no longer is a boy and how he views himself and the others around him. I also love to look at how he talked about mason in the beginning of the novel to the end. Just a great book!! "
