Tessa Dare
In this lush and seductive novel, exciting new author Tessa Dare takes desire to brazen heights. Ever the bold adventuress, Lucy Waltham has decided to go hunting for a husband. But first she needs some target practice. So she turns to her brother’ s best friend, Jeremy Trescott, the Earl of Kendall, to hone her seductive wiles on him before setting her sights on another man. But her practice kisses spark a smoldering passion–one that could send all her plans up in smoke. Jeremy has an influential title, a vast fortune, and a painful past full of long-buried secrets. He keeps a safe distance from his own emotions, but to distract Lucy from her reckless scheming, he must give his passions free rein. Their sensual battle of wills is as maddening as it is delicious, but the longer he succeeds in managing the headstrong temptress, the closer Jeremy comes to losing control. When scandal breaks, can he bring himself to abandon Lucy to her ruin? Or will he risk his heart and claim her for his own?

"Love me some Jeremy & Lucy!

Brother's best friend trope with a lot of angst, spice, romance and plenty to make me happy and feel good.

Lucy's in love with Toby, who's obligated to marry Sophia (who is a paragon of womanhood, in Lucy's opinion) and conspires with the unwilling participant, Jeremy, at the beginning of the book, to work to seduce Toby into marrying her. It backfires, of course, and Jeremy gets a taste of Lucy and doesn't turn back. He utilizes a scheme of Lucy's to get her to marry him and take him back to Corbinsdale Abbey, which is described as something out of a gothic novel (craggy, dark, brooding, etc.). Lucy is a schemer and utilizes her schemes to move Jeremy this way and that.

Great 1st book of the series - love Sophia's story on deck!"
"3.5/5 ⭐️ Wow, I had a great time with this book considering it had a forbidden romance (brother’s best friend) and a manipulative female lead (trying to break up another relationship), both things I tend to dislike. However, Tessa Dare has a way of creating characters that make me empathize with them even if I want to knock some sense into them (I wouldn’t call it miscommunication, more a lack of communication, and even though it was sometimes frustrating, it was in a satisfying way that felt true to life). It sometimes fell into the trap of instalove or equating passion and love, but I did like the discussions about them. The leads as individuals were a bit much, but I did feel like they were well suited and liked that the plot went in ways I wasn’t expecting. I definitely liked the second half more than the first, seeing them navigate issues as a couple. I am glad I read this debut of hers and am excited to delve into more of her backlist after this one."

"I loved the plot from the first couple pages. There was pining, brothers-best friend, love triangles, tracking down old senile ladies in the woods, miscommunication, kissing during hide-and-seek, falling- in-love-with-your-wife (even though he was always in love with her to begin with!) and so much more.
