Topic: Fullmetal Alchemist

Are there any major differences I should be aware of between Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood? I started watching brotherhood, because I assume it is probably the same as the original just better animation. My brother told me that brotherhood is terrible and I should watch the original instead. What is the difference? Why does it matter?

rungemaille It’s funny because the general consensus is that Brotherhood is much better, and that it sticks closer to the manga

rungemaille I don’t hate the older one, but then it’s the first one I saw and Brotherhood hadn’t been made yet so I couldn’t be picky. I do prefer Brotherhood overall though

Marsh IMO, your bro is wrong. I much prefer brotherhood for reasons: 1. Absolutely no filler 2. It doesn’t waste time on TONS of irritating introduction stuff or boring Ed/Roy rivalry 3. It follows the manga which has a much better and more satisfying storyline 4. Apparently the souls of the victims of OUR ACTUAL 1940s holocaust power alchemy in the original?? Like that concept gives me the ick bc bruh how and also how exploitative of tragedy whoever thought that concept up. Brotherhood is way better.

Brandon Reed Oh my goodness, is THAT what they were saying at the end of the original? I got lost in the exposition and didn't catch that.

Brandon Reed There are huge plot differences. What happened is that the original anime outpaced the manga, so the anime team had to make up a rushed ending. Brotherhood's plot and animation are both better.

Dukeofnachos The original has a better introduction (Brotherhood speeds through a lot for the sake of time), but it came out when the Manga was still being written, so the back half is entirely different from Brotherhood. However, Brotherhood is completely faithful in adapting the manga. My opinion? There's no reason not to give both a shot.

Sara D Brotherhood and the original are similar up to a point, but brotherhood veers off and does its own thing afterwards. I've only seen Brotherhood so I don't know myself but that's what I've heard. I was told Brotherhood is best though.

Chris Bishop As many people have said, Brotherhood is generally considered to be the better of the two as it follows the magna throughout. If you’re like me and you grew up watching the original that may be the only reason I’d recommend it over Brotherhood. Personally I do prefer the pacing of the original (again grew up watching it so there’s the bias), but the overall story is done better justice in Brotherhood.

Dominishi Brotherhood follows the Manga, where as the first Fullmetal decided to take creative liberty and recreate a different plot. This happened because the anime had caught up to the manga and instead of waiting they just did their own thing. Brotherhood was released later to recreate the original ending from the manga. They are very different. The general consensus is Brotherhood is better.
