"Talk about bad timing, this interesting cyber-noir had both The Matrix and Cronenberg’s Existenz come out in the two months before its premiere. All of these films dealt with the idea of living in a simulation, in one way or another. The Thirteenth Floor couldn’t compete with its flashier and higher profile predecessors and it came and went without making much of an impact.
The film eschews action elements to focus on the mystery of the story and it works, for the most part. The supporting cast is strong with Gretchen Mol, Dennis Haysbert and Vincent D’Onofrio along and the production on the 1937 simulation looks good. The main issue is the lead. Craig Bierko is the central figure of the film and his performance is just flatter than a pancake. You need a charismatic lead for this kind of investigation centric movie and he just doesn’t hold the screen at all. There is also a relationship in the third act that is just clunky as hell.
That said, the film has some interesting ideas and it works pretty well on a technical level, so if you’re a fan of heady sci-fi or the cyber-noir aesthetic, I think you’ll enjoy it.
3.4 out of 5 Stars"
