This deceptively simple tale of a bored English couple travelling to Italy to find a buyer for a house inherited from an uncle is transformed by Roberto Rossellini into a passionate story of cruelty and cynicism as their marriage disintegrates around them.

"I am rating this film mostly because of how much the beautiful country of Italy is shown off to its advantage. There are scenes of the movie in which the main character, Ingrid Bergman, is touring historical sites and museums, and being told their origins and artistry. George Sanders plays the role of her husband, and they have both traveled to Italy to think about their strained marriage, and possibly sell the villa that once brought them joy. You can feel the polite tension as they try to avoid talking to one another. There are a few scenes in Capri in which the husband meets a woman there that he finds fascinating. This movie is more of an art piece, and a love letter to Italy. That is fine, but there really isn't much else going on here. "
