"This is one of those movies that must have been absolutely genre-defining at its release. It’s still an extremely solid film, with fantastic performances by everybody, a zippy screenplay and wilder’s eye for camera direction. The only truly unfortunate thing is that I am not the original audience, and I’ve seen way too many cop and courtroom dramas in the decades since the 1950s. I told my father within five minutes of Marlene Dietrich showing up who the murderer was. And I was right."
