"The plot of the movie wasn’t the most original in the world, a mob revenge drama with a good message of ending the cycle of violence being a conscious choice, but its direction blew me away. Sam Mendes was so intentional with everything, from the lighting to the camera angles to the sound choices. The moments that stuck out in particular were the double murder in the bathroom and the choice to not show the bodies but just let the audience hear Sullivan’s sobs, the absolute silence as Sullivan wastes the men in the rain only for the sound to return for the penultimate shot, and, of course, the full circle bathroom moment with the door slowly closing showing the body in the mirror, symbolically closing that chapter for Sullivan. Another amazing element of this film was the STELLAR CAST. Tom Hanks was, of course, brilliant and was truly the heart of the film. Daniel Craig was a great villain, and he was pretty spooky in some scenes where his face almost looked gaunt like a skull. Paul Newman was excellent as well as Stanley Tucci. Who really impressed me was Jude Law though. His performance as Maguire was eerie and gave me the heebie jeebies. Lastly, I loved how perdition served symbolically as both the town where Sarah lived and what many Catholics (like the Sullivans) would likely think would await Sullivan, Rooney and all the rest of the criminals in the film after everything they’ve done."
