"Havoc was a bit of a disappointment, I expected more. This is an example of style over substance. The movie has a dark and gritty look to it (which is a good thing) and most of the action scenes are pretty wild. But the story is weak and most of the supporting cast are underutilized with zero character development. The cinematography is choppy and jerky which makes some of the action hard to follow. Tons of bad guys shooting an endless amount of rounds but never hitting their targets. Bonus points for additional blood and gore in the fight sequences though. So if you're looking for a movie with some crazy action but completely lacking story structure, give it a shot. 6.5/10"
"Gareth Evans don’t make many movies but I’m so thankful for the ones he has. Fantastic action movie. Well written. A+ all star cast. Worth it for the enhanced car chases alone. My minor gripe would be it became too gun reliant but that’s only because the hand to hand action is just mind blowing. Fave of the year. "
"4.5 stars. This was action packed. The sound department wasn't playing around. The shots sounded like cannons. The action sequences were long and complex. The lead character wasn't a protagonist, but a bad guy that you want to see win only because he's helping the right people this time. But even that is not for any good reason. So you hope he's caught as soon as this is over. I felt like this was a quick watch and I was thoroughly entertained. A rating."
"Patrick Walker is a dirty cop that gets a case involving the politician's son that he works for. He needs to get him out of trouble, but things get complicated as his past with other dirty detective collide with his current job and the very powerful Triad that are out to kill this politician's son. This is a throwback action film in the same vein of a Van Damm, Segal or Willis. The plot is pretty basic but there is lots of gun play, tons of bodies and the hand-to-hand combat is gritty and grimy. There are some really nice action scenes. However, it does take a long time to get going. They provide way more background than we really need for this kind of movie. Especially when the plot is pretty thin and they really only flesh out the main character. I would rate this higher with a bit more editing and a tighter script. As is it's a very entertaining action movie. If you love action in that old school style this one is a must see. "This movie was a victim of pedigree and expectations. If I had went in expecting decent, bloody action/crime b-movie, I probably would’ve come out with a positive view of it. However, this is Gareth Evans attempt to crossover to the mainstream with the follow up his groundbreaking Raid films. It is an English-language movie with stars and a big budget but it just underwhelms.
Forest Whitaker’s and Tim Olyphant’s characters might as well be named “generic corrupt mayor” and “generic corrupt cop”. I don’t expect deep back stories in action movies but they aren’t even given personalities. Both performers are so charismatic, it’s crazy that they didn’t give them something to do. Tom Hardy isn’t given much more to work with, other than he’s brooding and driven by guilt. The, mostly hand-held, action sequences are elaborate and bloody but not particularly memorable. I think using the older Western actors probably is why there is more splatter and less physicality to the action sequences. The plot is basically get feuding parties in one place, shoot-shoot-stab-stab, rinse and repeat.
I’m probably being too hard on it. The movie is completely watchable. If this had been a Scott Adkins flick, shot for $500k, I’d probably be recommending you to check out this dumb, crazy action movie. I was just hoping for so much more."
