David gives his wife, Joyce, an unexpected—and unpleasant—surprise when he suddenly demands a divorce. When she then learns that David has taken up with a younger woman, Joyce decides to make the most of this separation by taking a solo trip to the Caribbean. However, just before diving into a vacation fling, she runs into Emily, an old chum whose own divorce has left her embittered. Joyce then debates giving married life one last chance.

"Bette Davis usually does well in roles in which she plays a very confident and independent woman. She does so here. Bette plays the role of Joyce Ramsey, and unfortunately her independent and domineering attitude towards her family and others makes for an increasingly difficult and troubled marriage. Her husband, David Ramsey, is played by Barry Sullivan. Joyce has very definite ideas of how she wants their lives to be, and takes charge almost immediately, causing ripples in relationships. The plot is basically about how Joyce's unemotional pragmatism towards her marriage filters down to her husband and children and their lives decades later. "
