"This comedy drama featuring mostly French actors took me by surprise. It starts as a light-hearted comedy, and becomes much more melodramatic. I had only seen Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier in the musical Gigi, and Charles Boyer in other movies, but never all together. Horst Buchholz, of the original Magnificent Seven, stars as Marius. Leslie Caron plays the role of Fanny, and the two grow up together near a port of France. Marice Chevalier, or Panisse, also tries to woo her. Charles Boyer, or Cesar, plays the role of Marius' father, who wants him to join his port side business and keep it going, but Marius has other plans. This film is about two decisions that affect the lives of two families. Most of the film shows what happens as a consequence of those decisions. The emotional scenes were very moving, and were balanced well with humor. "
