Millions of kids can't read well. Scientists have known for decades how children learn to read, but many schools don’t know about the research. They buy teacher training and books that are rooted in a disproven idea. In Sold a Story, Emily Hanford investigates four authors and a publishing company that have made millions selling this idea.

"Recommending this to all parents/teachers/adults who can read! As a former teacher and current parent to a 22 year old and nine year old, this story hit so hard. The journalist found how the ways reading being taught in schools in America are not effective, and have not been effective-and have been proven that way. She interviews those who taught these specific methods of reading and those who fell through the cracks because of it. I was riveted! I thought there was no way this was still being taught, but in many states, and districts-a form of it is. Well worth a listen."
