"4⭐️ Outstanding work by Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway portraying the often delusional, near maniacal and completely tone-deaf couple Adam and Rebekah Neumann, in the story of the meteoric rise and fall of WeWork, and really the sad reality of how anyone..ANYONE..can be suckered in by stage presence, hyperbole and pretty sounding nonsense.
This show is a perfect, well produced representation of where we are now with greedy a$$holes and faux influencers and too many people taken in, given to messianic hero worship and cult culture. WeWork, Theranos, Fyre Festival? Everyone wants to be the next Steve Jobs even without a clue as to what they’re doing.
It gave me much more insight into the world of big business, finance, and start ups, and how something that should be solidly concrete is instead rather nebulous, resting on a bed of smoke and mirrors, existing on wishes, dreams and a thread.
Immediately finishing the final episode I watched the documentary again after a couple of years, which much of this series follows. To see footage of the couple you can’t help but think how DID so many buy in? They’re clearly a little weird and creepy plus Adam couldn’t find a straight answer with a map and a compass. The sheer bombasity and wildly delusional confidence show up as larger than life presence, and I don’t know.. maybe that IS a definition of charisma?
But Jared and Anne are naturally going to possess a thousand times beyond that, their portrayals capturing the creepy weirdness with eccentric flourish and a theatrical transcendence that heightens the true reality and matches the tone of the show. I was watching with a feeling of almost awed fascination.
Although dragging on occasion, mostly it moves at a brisk pace, is expertly edited, shot, lit and set, plus many excellent, and a few familiar actors in supporting roles with O-T Fagbenle a stand out.
This is a far underrated series that seems to me deserves a good deal more attention than it received. "
