"I saw this movie decades ago, and it was my first exposure to the historical Loving family. Lela Rochon as Mildred and Timothy Hutton as Richard, the Lovings, an interracial couple who lived in a small town in Caroline County, Virginia, in which blended relationships and friendships were not taboo, but found life very different when striking out on their own. Richard was white, but I didn't know until recently that Mildred identified culturally as Native American, specifically Rappahannock, a historic and now a federally recognized tribe in Virginia, and had African American ancestry. The Washington court case to marry is documented somewhat here, and of course, that is a landmark case. "
