"After having seen so many reviews that called this movie " A PHENOMENAL FILM", "BEST OF THE YEAR", and "A MASTERPIECE", I can't help but feel duped. Maybe my expectations were set too high, because my opinion is going to be an unpopular one. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie by any means. I just don't think it's as great as everyone else seems to think it is.
Set in Mississippi in the 1930s, twin brothers, Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B Jordan) return home from Chicago, after working with Al Capone, to open their own "juke joint". And that's where the first plot hole comes in... Why would anyone open an after hours spot in a "dirt poor" community and expect to get rich?
I didn't mind the pacing, I can appreciate the need for character development. But it's blatantly obvious that it was modeled after FROM DUSK TIL DAWN with elements of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN thrown in. Other reviewers also praised the music, but I can't say that anything really stood out and got stuck in my head. That brings me to the party scene, where the message was that great music can transcend time, melding different genres... But that scene had too much of an Art House vibe for me, which I can't stand. I also didn't see the need for Delta Slim, played by Delroy Lindo, to sacrifice himself as the vampires had retreated at that point, for no reason I might add. Michael B Jordan definitely stands out and did a great job pulling double duty, playing two characters. Sinners is a quality production with some decent cinematography and cool horror FX, I just don't think it's as great as everyone else claims it to be. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. 7.5/10"
"Best movie I’ve seen this year. Deserves all the hype. Let Ryan Coogler, the writer and director who has never made a bad movie, make whatever he wants. Terrific cast, led by Michael B. Jordan who plays twin brothers that are each their own fleshed out, recognizable characters amazingly. It’s a monster movie but what it’s really about is how powerful music is in some cultures. Just a wonderful, beautiful movie. "
"I loved this movie so much. It stuck with me for weeks after. Gorgeous writing...incredible cast.....fantastic soundtrack. I'm from the south born and raised and this was just such a love letter to the south complete with black angst and strife and the blues that was borne of our baptist churches and the eventual conflict between both coupled with the ever present racial strife the south is known for topped with...vampires!!! Also loved the diverse cast and the beautiful nods to the Indian, Irish and Asian cultures."
"It’s a fun little thriller movie involving vampires set in the time where the ku klux klan was still around. For horror fans it might be pretty tame, I consider it a fun short story almost. I love the Irish song they chose to use in there and giving tribute to blues music and it’s origins being from wonderful African American people."
"A must watch!!"
