"4⭐️ I will always watch a bts ballet show and ÉTOILE delivered everything I needed. The dancing is gorgeous yes, and the NY and Paris backdrops transportive, but what sets this apart is a sharp comedic edge that took me by surprise. I guess I was expecting pain, trauma and all the unlimited sacrifice to the art. However the usual tropes are given over more to glossy diversions of sudsy drama and chaotic tension delivered in a quickwitted lighthearted tone. It’s all speedy banter with a high strung edge .. interspersed with off the rails tantrums and exquisite dance sequences. Ridiculous sure, over the top and implausible in most ways, but that’s the fun of it. This is not one to take seriously.
The acting can be a bit of a mixed bag, however mostly good with the leads standing out ~ Charlotte Gainsbourg (the only one I was familiar with!) and Luke Kirby, but especially Lou de Laâge who’s a salty furious whirlwind of an angry nymph. Her unapologetic, in your face ferocity did me in, and I found the mother/daughter scenes hilarious (the apple doesn’t fall far..lol). If played by different actors I would’ve found them totally annoying yet both bring something transcendent to the table. Lou’s Cheyenne riveted me on screen and on stage. To give due credit, her dance sequences are seamlessly doubled by Constance Deverney who does incredibly amazing work. Honestly I wanted more dance. A lot more.
Not saying there aren’t cringe inducing moments.. there ARE .. sometimes a little too stereotypical, too eccentric. Some characters and events didn’t necessarily work for me, and a few storylines and plot devices kind of gratuitous. Overall though I have to say I didn’t care all that much. This show is frivolous, fun and diverting and I was entertained.
So anyone looking for deep, dark, or meaningful here ~ (BLACK SWAN, FLESH AND BONE) ~ need not apply. But do if you’d be into a more acerbic and adult oriented CENTER STAGE, BUNHEADS, and of course .. FAME "
"Writing not my favorite. It took me awhile to get into it. Great dancing. Idk what to think. I like it but I don’t know 😂. Cheyenne is quite a character I will say. I feel like it somewhat got better towards the end of the season. Susu story was interesting… I think that what kept me going a little and also just general curiosity of wanting to know how the season ended. "
"From the same executive team who brought us "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," the similarities were almost signature. With the same quick paced line delivery and comedic timing, it was hard not to see a bit of Maisel in the series. Not to mention the addition of Luke Kirby in a main role who was a fan favorite in Mrs. Maisel.
In all honesty though, I am more between a 4 and 3 for this show. I really enjoyed the latter half, but I spent the first half really just giving it a chance. For a show whose premise is about swap between New York and Paris ballet, it kind of felt like the Parisien storyline was an afterthought amongst all that was happening in New York. However, i think they set themselves up nicely for the possibility of a season 2, which i would happily watch."
