“Neon Gods meets Fifty Shades... Deliciously dark and sexy!” —#1 NYT bestselling author Helen HardtI thought a weekend away would be the perfect escape. Until I woke up married and trapped...by the king of the Dark Fae.For Bryn Meara, a free trip to the exclusive and ultra-luxe Nightfall hotel and casino in Vegas should’ve been the perfect way to escape the debris of her crumbling career. But waking up from a martini-and-lust-fueled night to find herself married to Caiden Verran, the reclusive billionaire who owns the hotel and most of the city, isn’t the jackpot one would think. It seems her dark and sexy new husband is actual royalty—the fae king of the Night Court—and there’s an entire world beneath the veil of Vegas.Whether light or shadow, the fae are a far cry from fairy tales, and now they’ve made Bryn a pawn in their dark games for power. And Caiden is the most dangerous of all—an intoxicating cocktail of sin and raw, insatiable hunger. She should run. But every night of passion pulls Bryn deeper into his strange and sinister world, until she’s no longer certain she wants to leave...even if she could. "⭐️⭐️

While the story is intriguing, I'm not a real fan of the writing. The writing of Bryn as a character is especially sloppy and doesn't feel very realistic. How does a woman who has been taken hostage by brutish men in Vegas not fear the worst and refuse to play nice even before she's realized that is how she might be able to escape? Instead, before Bryn even has the idea of "good behavior might = escape," she is friendly towards her captors and everyone else in the house.

I think the only realistic reaction Bryn has the entire book is when she sees a wolf in front of her door. Even then, I don't think the author has ever seen a wolf and how big they are. She describes the wolf as massive, then Bryn observes that the wolf's head reaches her waist. That's... actually pretty small for a wolf. Wolves are typically larger than even large dog breeds, and as a woman of average height, I have a Great Pyrenees mix who's head easily reaches my waist. Wolves are bigger than him, so unless Bryn is 6ft or taller, that wolf is pretty small... for a wolf.

These unrealistic descriptions persist throughout the book and are always concerning the simplest things, that even the slightest big of research would remedy.

Oh, and speaking of research, Maxwell consistently screws up on simple math concerning the ages of her own characters based on numbers and rules that she herself created for them! Example: if Caiden had been to the ToR as many times as he says he had, he'd be well over 400 years old considering moon phases are fairly consistent, yet he's only 169 years old. Again, simple math or research would easily remedy this problem.

As a side note: Stockholm syndrome victims NEVER think they have Stockholm syndrome, so that was a stupid idea, Bryn!!

While references and inside jokes can be a great additive, far too many make it seem like the writer has no original ideas.

I am appreciative of the romance... at the very end of the book. Before then, it is messy in all the wrong ways, relies way too much on the **** scenes and almost nothing else, and while the scenes in this book aren't my cup of tea I won't bash them, but it is very unrealistic as far as this supposed mate bond is concerned. They think in such a way as to imply their love for one another based on attributes other than the physical, but in action and conversation, it is ALL physical and nothing else. Again, not what I would imagine from this supposed mate bond.

My final gripe, and then one more side note: The plot is very see-through, and I could already see the pieces being put into place from the first few chapters. Don't get me wrong, the plot is great, I love it. I just wish I couldn't see it from a mile away. I only got two predictions wrong: that Bryn was half fae rather than full fae, hidden in the human world; and that Seamus was a double-agent betraying Caiden out of disdain for his method of ruling. Those are the ONLY two predictions I got wrong, but I made loads of predictions right from the get-go.

As for my final side note: Caiden, PLEASE tell me you were not still acting like a virgin at 70 years old!!!!! With a life cycle similar to humans but you just live a lot longer, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me that was a typo and you meant 17, right?? RIGHT????

I am mildly frustrated that I have to read the rest of the series to discover what happens concerning the whole plot with the king of the Day court, as so few questions were answered in this book. Unless the next two really impress, I don't think I'll be picking up a fourth book from this author."
"OOOOOOH OKAY NOW LISTEN. The cover of this book IS SPOT ON. SPOTTTTT ON. Neon gods meets 50 shades of grey.
