"A fun take on protector. The only part I found confusing was the falling out because of what he had done when he was trapped into the sword. It actually made no sense to me why she would be mad. Weird. Other than that, this was a surprisingly good read for me! It's been on my booklist for a long time and I finally started it. Then was hooked and finished in 3 days. Lol. "
"Solid 4-star read!
I really enjoyed Swordheart—Halla and Sarkis were such a fun, dynamic pair, and Zale made for a delightfully quirky third wheel.
The story kicks off with Widow Halla, who's in her late 30s and perfectly content staying single. After the death of her eccentric uncle-in-law, she inherits his estate… but not without complications. His awful relatives are determined to force her into marriage with a clammy-handed cousin she wants nothing to do with.
In a moment of desperation, Halla attempts to take her own life with an old sword—and that’s when things get interesting. Out pops Sarkis, a smoking-hot warrior bound by magic to serve the bearer of the sword. After a scuffle (and some chaos), the two flee the house and set off on a long journey to find a priest-lawyer who can help sort out Halla’s inheritance situation. Along the way, they meet Zale, a gentle, offbeat cleric with a very loose relationship to the concept of rules.
The trio makes for a chaotic but lovable team as they deal with attacks, legal red tape, and growing feelings. I loved the world-building, the humor, and the well-drawn, endearing characters. It looks like this ties into a larger universe, and I’m absolutely invested in reading more.
Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys cozy fantasy with a dash of romance, clever banter, and a magical sword or two."
"What a great read! The writing, first of all, is hilarious. Kingfisher really has a knack for comedy, and I’m delighted to say this book had me laughing quite frequently. I also love that the premise of the plot, though quite initially simple, managed to be made into a whole adventure of over 500 pages. Not once did I feel that the story was dragging. It had such a great set of characters, who bounced so well off one another. Halla is definitely a unique heroine, and a bit of a deviation from the usual young/new adult archetypes I read about so often. <br/>Halla, Sarkis, Zale, and Brindle (the beloved gnole) were a great eclectic group to have an adventure with."
