Five troubled teenagers fall into prostitution as they search for freedom, safety, community, family, and love in this #1 New York Times bestselling novel from Ellen Hopkins. When all choice is taken from you, life becomes a game of survival. Five teenagers from different parts of the country. Three girls. Two guys. Four straight. One gay. Some rich. Some poor. Some from great families. Some with no one at all. All living their lives as best they can, but all searching…for freedom, safety, community, family, love. What they don’t expect, though, is all that can happen when those powerful little words “I love you” are said for all the wrong reasons. Five moving stories remain separate at first, then interweave to tell a larger, powerful story—a story about making choices, taking leaps of faith, falling down, and growing up. A story about kids figuring out what sex and love are all about, at all costs, while asking themselves, “Can I ever feel okay about myself?” A brilliant achievement from New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins—who has been called “the bestselling living poet in the country” by Mediabistro.com—Tricks is a book that turns you on and repels you at the same time. Just like so much of life.

"I bought this book because I had read and enjoyed previous books by Ellen Hopkins. What I didn't expect was every single character in this book to enter prostitution. There was a lot of nudity, sex, and vulgar language because of it. I kept reading though because it was interesting and I don't know there's just something special about poetry that Ellen Hopkins writes. It tells a story and everything connects by the end... Oh yeah speaking of which, I really liked the ending. It was probably my favorite part of the book by far.
To be honest though, this book was darker than her other novels, so if you're looking for something not so dark, I'd recommend checking out some of her other books. Don't get me wrong, it's a really good book with a really good story as well as a lesson to it. It just was too much for me, but I'm still glad that I finished it. "
"Wow, totally get why this is banned but damn. I thought Crank, Glass and Fallout were great reads. This was every bit worth the wait to listen to. The audiobook was done by a full cast and I appreciated the difference voices for the different teens. There was a lot to digest in this book but it was powerful. It was heartbreaking to hear the results of all of the teenagers, whether good or bad but it was visceral. Everything about this book screamed. To be noticed to be heard to be seen and I can't really imagine something like this being banned. This isn't everyone's reality but it could be someone's and it deserve to be read. Highly reccomend to atleast 17 with caveats of trigger warnings galore and trauma galore."
