This YA fantasy “combines one of the most creative magical systems since Harry Potter, with sizzling romance and characters who will win your heart” (Cinda Williams Chima, New York Times–bestselling author of the Seven Realms series).Iolanthe Seabourne is the greatest elemental mage of her generation—or so she's been told. The one prophesied for years to be the savior of the Realm. It is her duty and destiny to face and defeat the Bane, the most powerful tyrant and mage the world has ever known. This would be a suicide task for anyone, let alone a reluctant sixteen-year-old girl with no training.Guided by his mother's visions and committed to avenging his family, Prince Titus has sworn to protect Iolanthe even as he prepares her for their battle with the Bane. But he makes the terrifying mistake of falling in love with the girl who should have been only a means to an end. Now, with the servants of the tyrant closing in, Titus must choose between his mission—and her life.“A vividly realized fantasy world.” —School Library Journal“It’s . . . easy to be absorbed by the delicious, troubled romance between Titus and Iolanthe and their desperate situation. . . . [A] fantasy saga to watch.” —Booklist“A wonderfully satisfying magical saga.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

"I am not usually a big YA fan, but in this instance I am actually glad I didn't know it was YA when I started because i would have missed out! This first novel (of 3) reads more like a magical action/adventure fantasy-meets-urban-fantasy where the main characters just happened to teenagers. There's blessedly few clichés, zero Love Triangle, and cheerfully imperfect and completely human characters who are just trying and make the best of the hand Destiny has decided to deal them. And they really aren't at all happy about Her meddling, either.

"If you cross Harry Potter, Narnia and Grimm's Fairy tales you get The Burning Sky.

Iolanthe is the ward of Professor Hayward and has been living with him since she was a small girl. She is an elemental mage but only has control of three of the four elements: water, fire and earth. Professor Hayward destroys a potion she had spent a week preparing and told her that she is not to perform her duties to light the path for a wedding ceremony. After finding that a bolt of lightning can save her potion, she attempts it with unforeseen consequences.

Prince Titus has been waiting a long time, since his mother's prophecy, for such a sign and now he is about to play his part in bringing down the Bane, the most evil and dangerous mage, with the help of the most powerful elemental mage in a generation who just happens to be a girl. Prince Titus and Iolanthe are brought together by fate and forced to work together to stop the largest evil their world has ever known.

Action, magic and even some romance make this a great read for fantasy fans."

"Loved this book so much. Had to go out and grab the sequel immediately after I finished this one and was super annoyed when it wasn't in stock. Waited another day and drove way out of my way just to pick it up at another location. If you enjoy fantasy and a little romance, this one's for you."
