Who needs a wedding ring when you can pick up a sword? A remarkable and utterly inventive novel from Sharon Cameron, author of THE DARK UNWINDING, which USA TODAY called "spellbindingly imaginative."History has a way of repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris, all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a criminal?Meanwhile, across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy's arranged marriage to the wealthy Rene Hasard is the last chance to save her family from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fiance is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is she. As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes grow higher, Sophia and Rene find themselves locked in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse. Daring intrigue, delicious romance, and spine-tingling suspense fill the pages of this extraordinary tale from award-winning author Sharon Cameron.

"I was afraid it would be slow after the detached beginning but the more I read the more I got into it. By the time I finished it it was a new favorite. The characters and the dialogue are so clever and fun. The way the plot speeds up as it goes and the way the scenes are described is cinematic is an amazing way. It's dramatic in the best way possible. Also enemies to lovers. One of my core comfort reads now."
"WOW!!! This book is a PERFECT slow-burn drama book!!! I've been anticipating this read for about a year now and it has EXCEEDED all of my expectations!!!! I thought I had had all the plot twists figured out but it turned out I didn't have *any* of them figured out!!!! This was written extremely well and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes slow-burn romances and high class drama!!!!"
"<strong>ugh </strong><br/><br/><br/>This book was a painful read for one reason and one reason only, Magdalena. Holy god, she was the dumbest FMC I’ve ever read. Literally, if there was a wrong choice, she made it. Every stupid question you could think, she asked it. And I know this part is 100% on the author not paying attention to their own work, but she asked the same questions multiple times, like she had forgotten she’d already asked before. She was ridiculously naive, to the point that I couldn’t tell if she was just meant to be that bad or if the author did it solely for plot devices. Literally every other character was written better and more thoroughly. Rook and figuring out what happened, were the only reason I even finished this. <br/><br/>Spoiler***<br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>I don’t understand why Rook let Dally go with Fraser in the first place. He could have said something, even discreetly, to get her to not go. Truly, the stupidity was one of the author’s main plot devices, and that’s just a frustrating choice for author’s to make and is frankly lazy. <br/>The book should have ended after her brother was handed over to the mob. The last 20-15% was completely unnecessary and just dragged things out"

"Extremely well-built world, characters, and plot. The series covers more than a bit of disturbing topics, at least touching lightly on torture, rape, and others, though not in great detail. the author does so fairly well, and keeps interest up, though I had to step away and read some lighter stories during the process of reading the whole series. Also well-written and edited, which is wonderful as that is a growing pet peeve of mine. Relatively few errors and more of those were things like duplicated worlds from the editing process (e.g., the the). All in all, a great read."
