Stephen King
Bev Vincent
#1 New York Times bestselling author and master of horror Stephen King teams up with Bev Vincent of Cemetery Dance to present a terrifying collection of sixteen short stories (and one poem) that tap into one of King’s greatest fears—air travel—featuring previously unpublished stories by King and Joe Hill, “an expertly compiled collection of tales that entertain and scare” (Booklist). Stephen King hates to fly, and he and co-editor Bev Vincent would like to share their fear of flying with you. Welcome to Flight or Fright, an anthology about all the things that can go horribly wrong when you’re suspended six miles in the air, hurtling through space at more than 500 mph, and sealed up in a metal tube (like—gulp!—a coffin) with hundreds of strangers. Here are all the ways your trip into the friendly skies can turn into a nightmare, including some we’ll bet you’ve never thought of before... but now you will the next time you walk down the jetway and place your fate in the hands of a total stranger. Featuring previously unpublished “standouts” (Publishers Weekly) by Joe Hill and Stephen King, as well as fourteen classic tales and one poem from the likes of Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, Dan Simmons, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others, Flight or Fright is, as King says, “ideal airplane reading, especially on stormy descents…Even if you are safe on the ground, you might want to buckle up nice and tight.” Each story is introduced by Stephen King and all will have you thinking twice about how you want to reach your final destination.

"3.5/4 ⭐

The only reason why I picked this book up in the first place was because I found out that Santino Fontana was one of the narrators and I loved his voice when narrating the You series. So I wanted more of him and stumbled upon this anthology. I was not disappointed with this listening choice!

I can see myself returning to this book some time in the future. Mostly because the week I listened to it, was a week filled with life events that kept my mind more occupied than this book. And that's not the book's fault. Listening to it on audiobook, all of the narrators were really good and engaging to listen to. My brain was just fixated on some things that were happening in my neighborhood and on the news that I just couldn't shake my brain to focus on some of the stories.

The other reason I'd like to revisit this book and be able to physically read it because a lot of the terminology on aircrafts went a little over my head. Which is fine, but if I physically read it I could pay a little more attention and I'd be able to search the terms and pull up visual representation to help morph the story into my brain.

I really liked that Stephen King narrated his own story at the end of the book as well as introducing each author and their stories at the beginning of each chapter. The interview in the end with Bev Vincent was a fun interview getting to know how they came up with this short story collection.

The stories I fully listened to I was enveloped in and glad I wasn't listening to this while flying. Some stories I enjoyed more than others but overall had a great listening experience."
