"The only thing that could have been a saving grace from the very lazy script and extremely predictable, already-done-it story, would have been an extended fight scene with my man Chan and the OG Karate Kid. The lack of character development compounded the suckiness.
If you want to know what to expect, think of the Jaden Smith version but completely inversed. So basically, nothing new at all to experience. Just more Hollywood regurgitation."
"6/10
As a massive fan of the original, this was just alright. It was pretty much entirely about the moves and fights. To me this completely betrays the point of the original. Unclear on if you should see it in theaters or just wait until it hits streaming. Depends on how you feel about nostalgia cameos."
"There really isn't anything new you can do with this franchise, and they stick pretty close to the formula. The new kid in town, likes the bully's girlfriend who happens to be a martial artist, he enters the tournament for respect/personal growth. The only wrinkles they add is he has 2 trainers in Ralph and Jackie. He is also not a novice; the other kid is just more skilled than him. Other than that, this is pretty much a lesser version of the original. The tournament at the end (which is one of the major highlights of the original) just isn't very good or interesting. Part of what made the original cool is he was challenging the whole school to get to johnny. They built up that shole story line. Here it's just some generic dudes he has to get through, the rules are inconsistent and don't make any sense. Yes, I know the face contact from the original is overlooked but that is because it was good, and we enjoyed it. There were a couple of cool street fights, but I say just watch the original if you haven't seen that. It's much better than this updated one. "After succumbing to a thorough perusal of the IMDb reviews on this movie, I went prepared to give it -7 stars. I was pleasantly surprised that it was better than most of the franchise. You definitely have to pretend that the 2010 movie didn't happen, but otherwise I could overlook the minor issues and enjoy the movie. Would watch again!"
