"This period movie set in the times of courtesans and royalty cannot compare with the Bollywood or Indian Cinema that I have enjoyed for over three decades, but it was the first movie I saw with Indira Varma, decades ago that introduced me to South Asia. I know that is a shame to say, because there are much more superior films starring, about, and directed by those in the Indian film industry. But I still think this film has merit for storytelling. At its core this movie is a story about power, seduction, and forbidden love. As a whole, people like the mystery of the forbidden. Unfortunately, women and girls were shown as being forced or trapped as part of that type of life. So I have a bittersweet view of this movie. I liked that it kindled my interest to check out real Indian Cinema, but I don't think it is fair to say this film didn't produce good actors. Naveen Andrews has gone on to have a stellar career, and Indira Varma made more movies. "
"3.5 I first saw this movie many years ago. And I still like it a lot. If you're sensitive to sex scenes don't watch this movie. If you are triggered by forced sex then be careful with this movie. Under that there is a sweet love story in this movie as well as notes of jealousy and revenge."
