"Truly one of the best and most powerful movies I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Really f*cked up, brilliant cast, and the coolest cinematography I'd ever seen when it dropped. There have been a lot of films since this one that have leaned on his style, but this one will always come out on top. I think everyone in the world should watch this at least once. A sickly wonderful treat for any cinephile, it will be a part of my life forever. "

Why did it take me 25 years to watch Requiem for a Dream? I’m stunned I missed this masterpiece in 2000. As a film buff in school, I devoured early 2000s movies, yet this one slipped by, likely because its raw, brutal depiction of addiction didn’t get the mainstream spotlight it deserved. I only heard about it a few years ago and went in blind. Even as a huge Marlon Wayans fan back then, I had no idea he was in it until I started watching. What a revelation!
This film is one of the most disturbing, depressing takes on addiction I’ve ever seen, and I loved every minute. After one watch, it’s already among my all-time favorites—recency bias or not, that’s how I feel. The score blew me away. I’ve been loving this score forever, not knowing Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz sampled it for “Throw It Up” in 2002—one of his best rap songs. It never came up in casual conversation between me and my peers, so that alone lets me know how much of a gem this film actually is.
The performances are phenomenal. I didn’t recognize Jared Leto until I checked the cast afterward—he could’ve been a truly respected actor with this start. Jennifer Connelly is stunning and immensely talented. Marlon Wayans acted his ass off, delivering a raw, powerful performance that proves he deserved far more opportunities to play serious roles after this. I
rave about this film forever. If, like me, you let Requiem for a Dream fly under your radar, I highly recommend watching it now. I see the vast majority of my friends on here haven’t seen it so a challenge some of you if not all of you.
