"This romantic comedy drama starring Walter Matthau and Elaine May took me by surprise. Walter's character, Henry, is a spoiled, rich bachelor who loses his money and doesn't know what to do next. With the help of his Butler, Henry devises a plan to marry into money. James Coco plays the role of his very rich uncle. Doris Roberts plays a small role. I enjoyed this film from the very first scene, in which Henry's banker has to inform him of his loss of funds. The plot that follows is funny, at times sweet, and although out of character from the usual Mattau role, is endearing and sees Henry change slowly into a new type of man. "
"elaine may once again tells us that men are overdramatic and whiney and nasty. and we do everything and nothing to hide the truth all the time. her performance is undeniably charming, i was drawn to her soft spokenness & mundane clumsiness. this one feels more slapstick, the zooms and editing adding a cartoonish feel compared to the character study nature of mikey & nicky. at its core it’s human of course, and oddly optimistic in the end (i’ve since read was maybe not her original idea? makes sense). i guess when someone names a leaf after you and sees the world in your eyes, you feel compelled to forego your murderous plans."
