A Russian emigre prides himself on the way he's molded himself into a real Yankee in the USA, though the world he lives in, New York's Lower East Side in the late 19th century, is almost exclusively populated by other Jewish immigrants. When his wife finally arrives in the New World, however, she has a lot of assimilating to do.

"carol kane as gitl gives a piercing performance. watching her face the impossible task of becoming someone else so jake would love her was heartbreaking. it was beautiful to watch her grow into her power. i adored her tender moments w mr bernstein, they had me giggling & kicking my feet. there’s something so precious about their connection. i love movies where the power is held in the mundane, quiet movements. joan micklin silver has a great handle on showcasing that, unafraid to hold for long periods of time as we experience a realization, or quickly cutting away from a harsh scene, showing us birds. it’s so disheartening that there weren’t more female filmmakers at the time when they were making stuff as gorgeous as this. jake ain’t worth my wife’s little finger!"
