"Written and directed by Jonah Hill, the movie is a raw and unflinching look at growing up in the mid 90s amidst the skate culture. This 2018 film reminded me of the movie Kids which, ironically, came out in 1995. Hill was able to create a coming of age story that is a slice of life that looks authentic and is full of interesting characters with nicknames like F*cksh*t and 4th Grade. The shining star of this movie is Sunny Suljic who's portrayal of Stevie/Sunburn perfectly conveys how a young boy can be influenced by friends to try things for the first time regardless of the outcome. I waited a long time to see this movie since it wasn't available on any of my subscription services until now. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint. 8.5/10"
"A24 does it again!! This one is definitely going on my favorite films list! Lol! Because this film is a lot like Lords of Dogtown, which is a top tier skater flick! And I say that because it’s similar to Lords of Dogtown but set in the 90’s instead of the 70’s and on the east coast instead the west coast. Also As someone who came of age in the 90’s, this film was peak nostalgia! The music, the clothes, the slang, everything was pretty much on point in this film as cringe as some of it may be now. Some here are pointing out a scene where an older kid is making out with a younger kid but I remember situations like this when I was teen amongst my peers, it was definitely a strange time for sure but one I wouldn’t trade for the world. Now I wasn’t a skater boy back then but I knew some skater boys and they nailed the personalities perfectly! I had no clue that Jonah Hill had the artistic chops to pull off a work this masterful! If you’re a look at how the 90’s were, or just looking for a great coming of age story, I highly recommend this film for all of those! "
